Alex Retief was inspired to enter the wine industry after his parents planted a vineyard in the Gundagai region of New South Wales. He gained his wine science degree from CSU, and then completed vintages at Margan in the Hunter Valley and overseas in the USA and France, including a vintage at Cheval Blanc in 2007.
The Vines
Alex does not have any vineyards himself, so he buys fruit from the NSW regions of Canberra District, Hilltops and Gundagai. He produces an organic range of wines using fruit from his parents organically certified vineyard in Gundagai.
The Wines
Taking a more ‘old school’ approach to his wine making, Alex treats each parcel of fruit separately with the final blend finalised a few months before bottling. He aims to produce wines of quality and finesse, from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, Shiraz, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec.
