The name ‘Alkoomi’ is derived from a local Aboriginal dialect, meaning ‘a place we chose’. Similarly, the Alkoomi logo symbolizes an Australian grass tree found in the Frankland River area.
According to Jeremy Oliver, Alkoomi Wines is “one of the oldest and most important vineyards of the Great Southern region”.
However, Alkoomi wasn’t always a winery. During the late 1960’s Merv and July Lange were managing a large sheep property when Australian wool prices crashed. So in 1971, in a place “they” chose, in a corner of their property, they planted one hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon. Riesling, Sauvignon, Shiraz and Malbec soon followed and the first of Alkoomi’s wines were released in 1976.
Alkoomi Wines Location
Located in the Frankland River wine region, Alkoomi Wines is one of the largest family-owned wine producers within Western Australia.
Located just 80-kilometers inland from the Southern Ocean the Alkoomi property receives good winter rains and cool summer sea breezes not dissimilar to that of Bordeuax’s wine region.
Alkoomi Wine Types
Alkoomi continues to produce flavorsome red wines including Cabernet, Shiraz and Cabernet blends. Equally, Alkoomi Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc’s have gained a solid reputation for their pretty aromatic and varietal fruit flavours. Other Alkoomi wine varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Viognier and Semillon. Generally the wines from Alkoomi provide good value for money with the iconic wines enjoyable although seldom outstanding.
The Alkoomi brand encompasses: Alkoomi Icon Wines, Alkoomi Black Label and Alkoomi White Label range.

Semillon Sauvignon blends out of WA are a pretty safe bet for a value wine, and they don't come much better than this value offering from Alkoomi. It's a citrusy, grassy little number that also shows hints of tropical fruits and dairy on the nose....

A vision to make a very special blended red wine in the style of the great wines of France was first realised at Alkoomi in 1995 with the first vintage of the Blackbutt. The strategy employed to achieve this is to select only the best parcels...
