With over 120 years and five generations of family winemaking experience, it is little wonder that Angove Family Winemakers has emerged as one of the largest family owned wine companies in Australia.
Founded in the 1880’s by Dr William Angove, the first vines were planted at Tea Tree Gully in the Adelaide Hills. The Nanya Vineyard in Renmark in the Lower Murray’s Riverland area of South Australia followed in 1910 and remains one of the largest vineyards in the southern hemisphere.
Angove History
In 1886, Dr William Angove, emigrated from Cornwall, England with his young family in tow, to Tea Tree Gully in the Adelaide Hills. His original intention was to establish a medical practice, however an interest in chemistry saw him try his hand at winemaking.
Dr Angove began producing brandy and fortified wines for his patients, but as demand exceeded supply and his customer base grew, what started as a hobby, became a wine and brandy production which has evolved into a widely recognized Australian brand that now exports wine to over 30 countries worldwide.
Angove Location
Aside from the epic Nanya Vineyard in Renmark, Angove sources its grapes from other regions in South Australia, including Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Wrattonbully, the Adelaide Hills and Padthaway.
Angove Wine Types
Angove vineyards contain various grape varieties including: Semillon, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Chenin Blanc, Traminer, Malbec, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Riesling, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignong Blanc. The wines are generally modest although not without merit.
