Battle of Bosworth is the McLaren Vale operation of Joch Bosworth whom utilises the 40 year old vineyard - first planted by his parents - to craft seriously smart regional wines.
Battle of Bosworth History
Located in Willunga, to the south of the McLaren Vale township, the vineyard itself was first known as 'Edgehill', having been established in the early 1970's by Peter and Anthea Bosworth, planting the vineyard on an abandoned almond plantation.
In fact, Willunga itself was settled in approximately 1837 and Bosworths have been growing grapes in the district from the late 1840s. with Joch Bosworth taking over the running of the business in 1995.
Battle of Bosworth Grapegrowing
When Joch Bosworth took over in 1995 he made a quite significant change to the family vineyard, immediately converting it to organic viticulture, making Joch something of a pioneer for organic viticulture in the Vale. The Bosworths now have some 190 acres of 20 years and older Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Mourvèdre vines (and some Graciano and Touriga Nacional) which are fully certified 'A' grade organic.
Battle of Bosworth Winemaking Rationale
Being organic is both a limitation and a boon, with the limitation being that the wines will only ever be single vineyard propositions. The boon comes from the marketing advantage of organics, coupled with the fact that organic grapes are basically thought to be healthier and hence produce higher quality wines.
The other key to the success of the Bosworth operation is the spirit of experimentation, which is evident in the amarone style cane cutting used to make the White Boar Shiraz (as just one example) and in the unusual Chardonnay Viognier blend. Couple that traditional winemaking methods and old vines and you have absolutely interesting wines.
Battle of Bosworth Wine Types
There are eight wines in the Battle of Bosworth range, including Sauvignon Blanc, the aforementioned Chardonnay/Viognier blend, a Rosé, Shiraz Viognier, Preservative Free Shiraz, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and the White Boar flagship.
