In 1974, former Sydney radiologist Dr Peter Pratten, with wife Elizabeth planted their first grapes alongside the Capel River between Western Australia’s Bunbury and Busselton.
Formerly a stone fruit orchard, the area has rich, red soils on which the winery, estate vineyards, restaurant and cellar door now stand, with the first commercial vintage in 1980.
Reputed for producing cool-climate wines with balance, complexity and elegant fruit flavours, Capel Vale remains south Western Australia’s largest winery and boasts one of the region’s most advanced bottling facilities.
Capel Vale Philosophy
Of the belief that ‘terroir is king’, the Prattens exercise great care and dedication in their craft. This is evident with every vine hand planted and tended with astute winemaking assuring that fruit quality is replicated in the bottle.
Capel Vale Vineyards
Ambitious to seek out the best regions for each premium grape range within south Western Australia, the Pratten’s did their homework and invested accordingly. The outcome saw Capel Vale acquire vineyards in Geographe for Chardonnay, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Verdlho and Viognier, Mount Barker for Shiraz and Riesling, Pemberton for additional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc and Margaret River for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Capel Vale Label
Opposite Capel Vale winery is the Capel River where Sheldrakes (native Mountain Ducks) reside. Merrily squawking about, they never seem to stray too far from the vineyard and so it is only appropriate that these beautiful birds, which are symbolic of the region, feature on each Capel Vale wine label.
Capel Vale Range
The Capel Vale portfolio consists of three wine ranges: Single Vineyard, Regional and Debut series. Wine varieties include: Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Rose, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz.
