Charles Melton Location and History
Charles Melton Wines is an iconic boutique estate in South Australia’s Barossa Valley.Charlie moved to the Valley as a young lad in 1974. He honed his winemaking skills under the tutelage of Peter Lehmann and established the first vintage of Charles Melton Wines in 1984. He purchased 13 acres of grenache and shiraz soon after and built the existing cellar door and winery on Krondorf Road, just outside Tanunda. Since then, the boutique estate has gained international recognition for fine red table wines. Today the estate encompasses over 50 acres of prime Barossa Vineyard.
Charles Melton Wine Making and Wine Styles
Charles Melton wines are crafted with quiet patience to reflect the rhythm of the seasons and the richness of the earth. Charles Melton is considered a master of grenache, shiraz and mataro from dry grown, old vines. His passion for the Barossa Valley and Rhone inspired styles is reflected in authentic, handcrafted wine. The Charles Melton Nine Popes GSM blend has achieved legendary status in Australia. The Rose of Virginia is also acknowledged as one of the leading rose styles in the country. Charlie is also one of the only Australian producers of a rare vin-santo styled dessert wine, Sotto di Ferro.
Charlie Melton was one of the first to recognize the value and tradition of the Barossa’s historic old vineyards. At a time when others were pulling out shiraz and grenache to plant more fashionable varieties, Charlie was convincing farmers to conserve them. He was one of a small group of winemakers who helped retain the viticultural heritage of the Barossa. He remains an inspiration to many of the Valley’s young guns today.

Full brick-red colour, tawny rim; looks very advanced for '09. Smells very advanced too, even stale. Vanilla, chocolate and toasty oak aromas, but the whole thing is so tired it's bordering on oxidised. Machine oil. Same in mouth, where it's full-...
Deep, dense colour. Peppercorns and black fruit aromas, some vegetal notes. Thick, extracted and chewy in texture, with heaviness and clumsiness and not high on immediate drinkability. Strangely vegetal as well as overipe and somewhat porty. Diffi...
Savoury and spicy, this medium term red Rhone blend has an earthy, slightly meaty bouquet of dark plums, dark berries, musk and suede leather. It's long, smooth and juicy, with faintly mineral notes beneath its pastille-like presence of black, blu...
