Cockatoo Ridge was, arguably, the first ever 'critter label', depicting the sulfur crested cockatoo on a range of cheeky easy drinking wines. Cockatoo Ridge itself was first conceived by Mclaren Vale winemaker Geoff Merrill in 1990 principally to fill a gap in the market for budget sparkling wines.
The first wine released under the new label was the Cockatoo Ridge Brut N.V. which was notable for its faint pink colouring - not pronounced enough to term a rose but apparent none the less. This style has been continued in all subsequent releases. Since the initial releases the range has broadened to include still rose, white and red wines, though sparkling wine remains as the focal point.
Cockatoo Ridge Cellar Door
The Cockatoo Ridge cellar door is situated in the Barossa Valley on the main road between Tanunda and Nuriootpa. This high profile site was once the old Hardy's Siegersdorf winery, built in approximately 1930.
Cockatoo Ridge Wine Types
The backbone of the Cockatoo Ridge range is sparkling wine, with the range including a low calorie bubbly, several sparkling whites, 2 sparkling reds and a sparkling rose, alongside a Moscato, still rose, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay
