Crabtree Watervale Location and History
Crabtree is a small estate situated in the heart of the beautiful Watervale district of the Clare Valley. Crabtree was founded by Robert Crabtree in 1981, but the earliest vines were planted Aldolf Glaetzer in the 1880s. The property now comprises 13 hectares of premium Watervale vineyards including mature60+ year old grenache, 50+ year old shiraz, and 30+ year old riesling vines. The site is home to a small,modern 100 tonne winery and old stone cellar door housed in the historic 1846 homestead. Crabtree is owned and operated by Richard Woods and Rasa Fabian today.A small viticulture and winemaking team is lead by Kerri Thompson and Brendan Pudney.
Crabtree Watervale Wine Making
Crabtree Wines have quietly built an enviable reputation for classic, multi award winning Watervale riesling.Made in a crisp, dry style it shows plenty of lemon-lime citrus and florals with punchy acidity. Traditional premium shiraz and cabernet sauvignon are produced with great care, along with smaller amounts of tempranillo, grenache, and semillon.The wines are predominantly estate grown,with the exception of small parcels of old vine muscatto make an innovative zibibbo style and fortified grand muscat.
