Crawford River Location and History
Crawford River Wines is a family owned and operated winery in the south western Victorian region of Henty. Vineyards were established on the estate in 1975 by John and Catherine Thomson. The couple were justifiably inspired by the favourable micro-climate of a cool southerly latitude with maritime influence.Crawford River is now an internationally recognized producer of fine riesling. The small estate has paved the way for the wine industry in what was traditionally dairy, wool and cattle country.
Crawford River Wine Styles
The 11ha Crawford River vineyard consists chiefly of riesling and cabernet sauvignon varieties, along with smaller plantings of cabernet franc, merlot, semillon and sauvignon blanc. It is dry grown, hand pruned, hand picked and fastidiously maintained without the use of herbicides or insecticides. Leaf plucking, shoot thinning and green pruning are all carried out to achieve the highest possible fruit quality.

Medium smoked-salmon pink in colour. 'Crushed leaf' merlot or cabernet-like and a touch shrill, but pleasant enough. Clean. Palate is like the nose: tangy and crisp, 'crushed leafy' and a touch simplistic. A Bordeaux-style rose. Tidy finish.
Brilliant green-straw; a very interesting Riesling, made in the Rheingau style rather than Mosel, with varietal fruit, some sweetness, and acidity tightly woven together. The decision not to stop the fermentation earlier was brave, but paid off. A...
