Gembrook Hill Any Sauvignon Blanc and Blends Wines

This is one of the best sauvignon blancs we've ever seen from the Yarra Valley. It has a Loire-like complexity, which transcends most Aussie offerings. The aromas recall green salad, herbs and passionfruit, and there's a 'wild' kind of edginess that could be due to wild yeast fermentation. It's fresh for its age and has delicacy and 'cut' on the palate. While undeniably sauvignon blanc, it takes the grape a step further. It would suit grilled garfish and salad.

Rather funky and mineral, this elegantly structured, stylish sauvignon blanc reveals lightly grassy and smoky aromas of tangerines and wet stones. Its round and juicy expression of gooseberries and passionfruit reveals a hint of cassis, finishing fresh and clean with a lemon sherbet-like chalkiness.

Fresh, clean and crisp; delicate but vibrant, with a strong citrus line and good acidity running throughout.

Still pale straw-green; a sauvignon blanc that has benefited from time in bottle and will not break up with age; deliciously fragrant, it has passionfruit and kiwi fruit aromas and flavours, barrel fermentation handled with ultimate skill to provide structure, and in no way mask the fruit.

Strongly expressed varietal character throughout, but marred by slightly sweaty/reduced aromas; some are much more tolerant of those characters than I.The points are a compromise

Typical Gembrook Hill Sauvignon Blanc with hallmark flint and grapefruit on the nose followed by an austere, elegant palate with a crunchy mineral acid backbone. The palate is complex with grapefruit flavours and a hint of wet stone combining with subtle texture to flesh out the mid palate. Finely balanced with extraordinary length and zip. Gembrook Hill Awards & Accolades "Gentle cumquat, nettle smells, really clear and icy stream smelling. Gooseberry too. Unusually for sauvignon blanc, this has excellent length. 94/100." - Tim White, Australian Financial Review, October 2009 "The best Sauvignon Blanc in Australia." Steve Webber, Winemaker, De Bortoli "It's aromas are subtle: min...

Just lacking the sought-after brightness and vivaciousness expected of this variety, this otherwise honest and flavoursome wine presents rather a pungent and slightly sweaty aroma of passionfruit and gooseberries with grassy and floral undertones. Generous and oily, it culminates in a slightly metallic finish of steely acids.

Light green-yellow; a crisp, light and clean bouquet with an utterly correct mix of light gooseberry and more herbaceous aromas is followed by a commensurately delicate and fresh palate, with flavours tracking those of the bouquet.

Medium yellow-green; light to moderately intense tropical/passionfruit/gooseberry aromas feed into a palate with life, freshness and near perfect acidity to offset the softer fruit

Light to medium green-yellow; clean, fresh herb and mineral aromas are followed by a similarly lively and fresh palate, with good length and a particularly good finish.

Bright, light green-yellow; the clean, fresh and light to moderately intense bouquet does not have much varietal definition, but rather more comes through on the palate with a mix of grassy/citrussy/gooseberry flavours in a neatly constructed frame.

Still bright and fresh, with a balance of green pea, passionfruit and tropical flavours, the finish long and clean

Light yellow-green; the bouquet is light and clean. A mix of gooseberry and herbal aromas, palate similarly crisp and clean, with tangy lemony/herb and pear flavours

Yet another cracking example of sauvignon blanc out of Victoria's Yarra Valley, this time from the team at Gembrook Hill. With Andrew Marks and Timo Mayer behind the controls in the winery and large, old French oak employed as a key component, expect a pure and compact wine where smells of grapefruit, guava, cashew, and minerals set the tone for a mouthful of wine that unwinds with precision, displays terrific length of flavour, and is beautifully balanced by nervy acidity. Drink it with spaghetti vongole.

High in the Upper Yarra, Gembrook maintains its lofty position among Australia's finest sauvignons, if not proven in its detailed complexity on release, then certainly in its enduring energy to outlive virtually all others. The secret is a tightly strung backbone of honed acidity, providing linearity and finesse to its layered complexity of gooseberry pie, mixed spice, apple, preserved lemon, pear and fennel flavours.

Vivid green hue; as always, a savoury and engaging bouquet of gun flint, exotic fruit and fine herbs; the palate is taut and textural, with zesty acidity and plenty of grip; long and refreshing, and certain to be a pleasure to match with food.
