Hamelin Bay Location and History

Hamelin Bay vineyard and winery is located in Western Australia’s Margaret River wine region. The estate is owned by the Drake-Brockman family who have long pioneering roots in the area. The family association with the Margaret River district dates back to early settlement by the Bussell family in 1830. As a girl in 1876, Richard Drake-Brockman’s great grandmother, Grace Bussell famously rescued the survivors of the Georgette shipwreck on Redgate Beach with the assistance of an aboriginal stockman. Richard's great grandfather, Frederick read about the heroic feat in the Perth press and rode 300km on horseback to meet her. The couple were married in 1882. The Brockman and Bussell Highways which were named in honour of the two pioneering families.

Hamelin Bay Wine Types

Hamelin Bay is committed to the production of consistently good wine. Hamelin Bay’s five ashes vineyard is located on unique terroir in the Karridale district of Margaret River. White varieties are positioned on a cool eastern slope, while reds are situated on the warmer north facing slope on deep gravel loams near the cellar door. Hamelin Bay wines show intense character derived from individual grape variety and vineyard block. Whites exude freshness and elegance, while reds have richness, restrained power and depth.
