Founded by John Ellis and his wife Ann Tyrrell, Hanging Rock Wines was established in 1982 with ambitions for sparkling wine in mind. Ellis is a well respected winemaker who formed his career working for Krondorf and Yalumba wineries. Ellis was also the foundation winemaker at Rosemount Estate. He is a vigorous promoter of the Macedon Ranges, plugging wine and tourism interests in the region.
Hanging Rock Winery Location
Located near Mount Helen in the Macedon Ranges, Hanging Rock Winery. The ‘Jim Jim’ as the site is known, is the location of an extinct volcano with deep soils and excellent water supplies. This is a very cool climate site in what is known as the coolest grape growing region in Australia. The winery is 620 metres above seal level.
Hanging Rock Wine Types
Hanging Rock Winery makes three sparkling wines – an LD, a Rose and an NV brut cuvee. White grapes include the noble varieties, but Marsanne and Viognier are also produced. Red grapes run the list of noble varieties.

The Rock ranges offers accessible wines, with the estate wines are the next rung up for quality. The Jim Jim wines are the flagship wines of the producer. There is Shiraz fruit sourced from Heathcote for regional themed wines.
