First planted in 1973, The Hayshed Hill vineyard sits just off Caves road in the famed Wilyabrup sub region of Margaret River. The winery itself has quite a strong local history, with the property serving as a dairy farm and group settlement camp for soldiers post WWI. More recently (2006) former Howard Park winemaker Michael Kerrigan 'bought back the farm' and reintroduced a hands on, quality focused approach to the operation.

Hayshed Hill History

The first vines were planted on the Hayshed Hill vineyard in 1973, with the property going under the name of 'Sussex Vale' until 1989 when it was bought by Barry & Liz Morrison. The Morrison’s turned what was a rundown form into a serious wine producer, expanding the plantings to some 18 ha of vines.

As the old hay shed from the dairy days was a local landmark, the Morrison’s used this to create the new name for the property, Hay Shed Hill. Tools found in the hay shed provided them with the inspiration for Hay Shed’s sister label – Pitchfork Wines.

In 1992 the winery was redesigned by a local architect to complement the existing house and hay shed whilst still retaining the feel of the original dairy farm the property once was.

The Morrison’s owned the property for 11 years until 2000 when they sold to a wine investment group based in New South Wales. The next 6 years were a rocky one for Hayshed Hill as it suffered under the vagaries of wine investment management until 2006 when it was bought back by Michael Kerrigan.

Hayshed Hill Vineyard

Ideally situated on the deep red gravelly loams of Wilyabrup (the soil type itself is often referred to as 'Wilyabrup loam') the vineyard itself is north facing and free draining, with the varieties planted rather classical for Margaret River (even the Pinot, which is bizarrely still planted throughout Margaret River, even if it makes some less than classical Pinot styles).

Vineyard Plantings:
Cabernet Sauvignon 4.7ha
Cabernet Franc 0.6ha
Petit Verdot 0.3ha
Merlot 1.2ha
Pinot Noir 1.1ha
Chardonnay 3.6ha
Sauvignon Blanc 3.6ha
Semillon 2.2ha

Hayshed Hill Wine Types

The Hayshed Hill range has two tiers, covering the basic estate wines plus the block series of reserve wines. Their is also a very popular second range of more approachable styles under the Pitchfork label. The wines styles thus produced include Sem/Sauv Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz Tempranilo, a Cabernet based rosé and a Sangiovese (plus some special odd releases).

Drinking wine is part of the Australian lifestyle, it brings us closer together, allows us to form bonds and sometimes talk nonsense. Cracka are no nonsense when it comes to finding quality wines from quality vineyards like the Pitchfork range fro...

A second label for reinvigorated Margaret River winery Hayshed Hill, this looks very bit the Margaret River Cabernet Merlot, needing just a little more penetration and power to really push on through into the 'serious wine' territory. Much to like.
