Founded in 1998 by winemaker Dean Hewitson, these expressive, vivacious wines are made from incredible old vine sources, including the world’s oldest plantings of Mourvedre. Hewitson has a preference for old world winemaking, Hewitson is a larger than life character, popular within the wine making fraternity and known for his generosity of spirit.
Hewitson sources fruit from the ‘Adelaide Super Zone’, including the regions of Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley and produces wines at a centrally located winery.
Hewitson Wine Types
Hewitson excels at red varieties from his older vineyard sources. His Old Garden Mourvedre is a benchmark Australian wine, but he shows surprising depth with Shiraz and his Miss Harry Rhone variety blend (Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre). Whites include a Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling and he makes ‘summer wines’ in the form of a Moscato and a Rose.
Hewitson has a core range of wines under his Hewitson range while Private Cellar, Old Garden and The Mad Hatter round out the top flight wines.
Traditional technique in the winery allows the true expression of the old vine fruit to express itself. Hewitson is a stickler for detail and prefers small parcel ferments and the use of top quality oak in all his wines. All red wines are fermented in quality French oak.
