Howard Vineyard History
In 1889 Amos William Howard discovered subterranean clover growing naturally in the Adelaide Hills. Triggering a major contribution to the increase in pasture productivity, the seeding of 'Howard' and 'Mt. Barker' clovers became widespread throughout rural Australia. A thriving clover seed industry continues to this day.The Howard Vineyard now sits on the spot where Howard discovered said clover, with the vines themselves planted on set in the late 90's.
The Howard Vineyard plots
The Howard Vineyard group has two vineyards two it's name, Howard and Schoenthal, both located in seperate parts of the Adelaide Hills.Of the two, the Schoenthal Vineyard is the largest, consisting of 36 hectares near Lobethal with a slightly cooler and more elevated site that rovides an excellent site for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The elevation of 440-500 metres ensures a cool autumn for the ideal ripening of these varieties.
The estate 'Howard' Vineyard of 24 hectares lies between Nairne, Littlehampton and Mt Barker. With an elevation of 360-400 metres, it provides consistent quality Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes, while the slightly warmer aspect also suits Semillon, Viognier, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Howard Vineyard Wine Types
The Howard Vineyard produces a wide variety of wines, all deliberately built in a low alcohol, savoury, proper cool climate style. The range includes a sparkling, a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay (wooded and unwooded), rosé, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a dessert wine.
