Kurow itself is a tiny town of just 339 people (at the time of the 2006 census) located in the Waitaki Valley, an area known as the 'gateway to the high country' in NZ's South Island. Whilst Kurow itself is tiny, the Waitaki Valley is being heralded as the next boon region for high quality Kiwi wines, with it's Limestone soils being favourably compared to those of Burgundy.
Kurow Winery History
The Kurow Winery was the first one built in the Waitaki Valley (in 2007) and all of the grapes coming from the Waitaki and Hakataramea Valleys. Interestingly, the Waitaki Valley has been renowned as a fruit growing area since the early 1900's indicating just how suitable this area is to grow fruit.
Kurow Winery Wine Types
Like many other wineries in New Zealand's cool Southern reaches, Kurow is most renowned for it's fragrant Pinot Noir, although rich, textural Pinot Gris and off dry Riesling are also proving popular (alongside a cheeky Rose).

A light bright, cherry and red berry flavoured Pinot with soft sweet fruit and a lick of dry tannins. It's a pretty wine, made for immediate consumption. Easy.
