Louis Roederer remains one of the few Champagne houses that are still family affairs, with it's history tracing back to 1776. Louis Roederer is also unique in that it owns 2/3rds of the vineyards that they source grapes from, with holdings now sitting at approximately 214 hectares. The annual Roederer production is some 2.3 million bottles, of which 70-80% is the NV Brut Premier.
Roederer Wine Types
Like most Champagne houses, the backbone of the business is the non vintage wines, specifically the extra dry Brut Premier, Grand Vin Sec and the sweeter styled 'demi-sec' Carte Blanche. Interestingly, the NV wines are all made in a 2:1 Pinot Noir:Chardonnay ratio, with a smidgen Pinot Meunier. Conversely, the vintage cuvées (including the Brut Vintage and Rosé Vintage) are made in a ratio of 7:3 Pinot Noir to Chardonnay, with the Blanc de Blancs naturally 100% Chardonnay.
The pinnacle of the Roederer range is the blingtastic Cristal which is made as a white (equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) and a rosé (produced with the addition of red wine).
