A prime mover amongst the new breed of switched on young Yarra winemakers, Mac Forbes has quickly gained a reputation for his elegant, unforced and finely flavoured cool climate wines sourced from the heights of the stony Strathbogie Ranges right through to the rich soils of the Yarra Valley floor. Mac Forbes Vineyards
The backbone of Mac Forbes operation is eight small, hand tended vineyards that utiliise minimal inputs and sustainable practices to grow the absolute healthiest grapes. These vineyards span a number of subregions in the Yarra Valley (plus the vineyard in the Strathbogies), with said (unofficial) subregions then identified with unique bottlings. Winemaking also straddles the modern/traditional divide, with each parcel handled differently (and sometimes unconventionally).
Mac Forbes Wine Types
Mac and his team unashamedly aim for quite conventional styles (of sorts) aiming for purity of expression. The feature variety is undoubtedly Pinot Noir, drawn from sites around the Yarra Valley, along with precise Chardonnay, structured Cabernet Sauvignon, earthen Syrah and some off dry Strathbogie Ranges Riesling, not to mention the odd project wine - Austrian Gruner and Balufrankisch for example.
