Moorooduc Estate was established in 1981 by Richard and Jill McIntyre, setting up in the Moorooduc (unofficial) sub-region of the Mornington Peninsula. The estate is regarded as one of the pioneers of Mornington viticulture, with a particular reputation for full flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in particular, with the estate also famous for it's winery restaurant
Moorooduc Estate Philosophy
Quoting the winery directly, the philosophy of the wine side mirrors that of the restaurant - 'an emphasis on making most of top quality ingredients. Intensive, hands-on care in the vineyard, with minimal use of chemicals, produces the best possible fruit for the wines. Wild yeast ferments and minimal intervention winemaking, with a nod to traditional Burgundian techniques, allows the wines to express their site specificity, or terroir. Similarly, we aim to source ingredients for the food that is served is seasonal, local and organic.'
Moorooduc Estate Vineyards
Moorooduc Estate sources fruit from 4 vineyards, all of which are in the Moorooduc sub-region, with plantings dating back to 1983 in the original vineyard, with some more recent material sourced from some interesting newer clones in some of the other vineyard sites. All four of these vineyards are either managed by the Moorooduc team or someone directly connected with the business, ensuring consistent high quality fruit.
Moorooduc Estate Wine Types
The Moorooduc range is unashamedly narrow, focusing on regional hightlights - Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and a lonely Shiraz, alongside some very smart bubblies. The emphasis here is clearly on single vineyard wines and the best wines in this range rank as some of the Peninsula's finest.
