Moss Wood is one of Australia’s great wineries having been one of the founding vineyards in Western Australia’s Margaret River region and one that, to this day, continues to make one of its finest Cabernet Sauvignons.
Bill and Sandra Pannell planted the first experimental nursery in 1969 with two hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1970. Their development mirrored those of the other early vignerons of Margaret River such as Dr Tom Cullity at Vasse Felix. In 1985 current owners Clare and Keith Mugford bought Moss Wood and remain owners to this day.
The Moss Wood Region
Margaret River is located close to the most South Easterly part of Western Australia. Its development as a significant vineyard region began with the work of Dr John Gladstones who recognized the similarity between the climates of Margaret River and Bordeaux in France suggested its suitability for crafting quality wines. He was quickly proven correct with the planting of vineyards such as Moss Wood and Cullen illustrating its great suitability for creating quality and long lived Cabernet Sauvignons. Since the mid 1980’s, Margaret River has also shown itself to have enormous potential also with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon Blends
The Moss Wood Range
There are three Margaret River ranges from Moss Wood, those being Moss Wood Estate, Amy’s and Ribbon Vale. While the Estate wines come from the original vineyard site, and include the iconic Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon, the Ribbon Vale is sourced from a separate and distinct vineyard in Wilyabrup while the Amy’s wines are created from the Montgomery and Glenmore vineyards in Cowaramup and Yallingup respectively.
