Mountadam was first setup in 1972 by the late David Wynn, a pioneer of the wine industry credited with helping create the first wine cask as well as founding Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Wynn made the winery famous on the back of superb cool climate wines, supported by his son Adam (which the winery is named after). Adam held onto the winery until 2002 when it was sold to luxury goods business LVMH. The winery returned to family hands again in 2006 when it was purchased by South Australian farmer and accountant David Brown, whom has since reinvested back into the business to capitalise on what is ultimately an amazing site
The Mountadam Vineyard is the highest in South Australia, sitting at 550m above sea level in what is the only recognised sub region in the Barossa zone (High Eden). What sets High Eden (and thus Mountadam) apart is it's wetter, cooler climate (significantly cooler than the Valley floor) and hard rocky soils, both delivering wines that are firmer, finer and much more elegant than anywhere else in the Barossa.
One of the reasons why Mountadam has flourished (again) in recent years has been it's new winemaker Con Moshos, the long time senior winemaker at Petaluma whom, in Halliday's words 'Con eats (well, almost), drinks and sleeps Mountadam'.
Mountadam Wine Types
The wine range at Mountadam is essentially split into 3 tiers, with the top tier exclusively High Eden fruit, utilising the oldest vineyard plantings to craft a famously long lived Chardonnay, fine boned Shiraz and a powerful, firmly structured Cabernet blend. On the next tier lies a range of Eden Valley wines including a Pinot Gris, Riesling and Shiraz Viognier, with a final entry level 'Barossa' range that includes a Shiraz, Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlot blend.
