Something of a cult icon, Noon's is a small family owned winery in Mclaren Vale run by Drew Noon MW and his wife Regan, producing full bodied red wines that sell almost exclusively to a small (and very grateful) mailing list, with the prices kept deliberately low and the emphasis on intense flavours.
Noon's Vineyard
Noon's has a small planting of Grenache (4.2 hectares) and Graciano (1.5 hectares) in McLaren Vale with another small holding of Shiraz (1.6ha) and Cabernet Sauvignon (1.2ha) run by friends in Langhorne Creek. All of the vines are dry grown and largely untrellised with some vineyard sections dating back to 1934 (particularly on the home block).
Noon's Winemaking
Like many of the finest McLaren Vale red wine producers, the winemaking at Noon's utilises quite old techniques. For instance, all of the fermentation happens in open fermenters with the pressing done via an old basket press, similarly the new oak used is typically only around 20%, with large old oak used frequently. Similarly the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered to avoid any unnecessary processing.
Noon's Wine Types
The Noon's range is a focused one, featuring just a handful of wines, all red and all built large and ripe. This range starts with the full bodied High Noon Rosé, moving on to the Grenache based Eclipse, Reserve Shiraz, Cabernet and fortified 'port' styles. Throughout the emphasis is on dry, full bodied wines of power and extract.

Drew Noon has been familiar with biodynamics for years but has started applying its principles to his home vineyard only in recent years. The sold-out-in-a-flash Eclipse is from his home vineyard. There is always something classic about Noon Ecl...
This was made - due to the drought - in minuscule quantities and is really available only through the wine auction circuit. It's quite a wine, though. Enormous fruit power and magnificent tannin structure. The flavours are interesting too: blackcu...
Drew Noon's powerful reds were toned down a notch by the cool, wet 2011 vintage and his bargain quaffer has taken on an alluringly perfumed, savoury, spicy lift. Pink pepper, rose bud and savoury spice are expressive of both the season and the pro...
