Parker Coonawarra Estate was established in 1985 by the late John Parker. In 1991 he made a grand statement releasing his 1988 Cabernet Sauvignon under the name Terra Rossa First Growth, in reference to greatest expressions of Bordeaux.
The 50 acre vineyard is located at the Southern end of the famed Terra Rossa strip of iron rich red soils over limestone with plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Today it is owned by the Rathbone Family Wine Group with the talented Pete Bissell looking after the winemaking duties.
Terra Rossa
Coonawarra’s strip of Terra Rossa soils over limestone is one of the most famous terroirs in the world. Merely measuring 15km by 2km located North of Penola in the South Eastern corner of South Australia, the area’s iron rich soils give great density to the wines while retaining the perfume of great aged red wines seen in the finest examples. While Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the area’s strongest suit, Coonawarra Shiraz can also be incredibly stylish, while lacking the opulence of the wines seen from further North in McLaren Vale or the Barossa Valley.
Parker Coonawarra Estate Wines
Parker Coonawarra Estate remains today as it has always been, a red wine specialist. Its top wine is the complex and muscular Terra Rossa First Growth, only released in top vintages. The Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon and Terra Rossa Merlot are also fine examples of the Coonawarra style, with all wines having good aging potential.
