Established in 1844, Penfolds is one of Australia’s best known wine brands, representing entry level wines through to one of the country’s most iconic, prestige wines, Grange. Penfolds is world renowned for its bright, fruit rich wines and for its indelible link to Australian wine industry history. Some of Australia’s great wine industry legends have held winemaking roles with the company and careers have been made under their mentorship. The premium wines command respect for their depth of flavour and prized longevity.
Penfolds Wines Location
Cellar doors are located at Magill Estate, the historical home of Penfolds and in the Barossa Valley. Fruit is sourced from vineyards across South Australia, including Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley and of course from the Barossa Valley and Magill Estate vineyard.
Penfolds Wine Styles
Penfolds creates such a broad range of styles across their vineyard sites that essential style is impossible to pigeonhole. Powerful reds from ancient vineyard sites are equally impressive as more delicate, traditional interpretations of varieties and white winemaking has hit the upper echelon in the last decade. Innovation has seen new varieties introduced yet traditional varieties and blends hold their place. Noble varieties are the focus.
Penfolds Brands
Penfolds is the core brand but it is separated into various ranges to represent regional and price point differences. Icon and Luxury Range (including Grange), Special Bins, Cellar Reserve, Bin Range, Thomas Hyland, Koonunga Hill, Rawson’s Retreat and various fortified wines.
Penfolds Winery
Production is on a grand scale, but detail and traditional techniques are retained in the making of the premium wines. Oak regime and alcohol levels have come under scrutiny at times, but heritage and depth of experience in the winery allow for some leniency in wines destined for cellars, or for those seeking wines of immense power and concentration. At the more commercial end of the scale, large production values do come into place, with the height of modern technology applied to winemaking.

Impenetrable black with a concession of purple at the rim. Saturated dark fruit flavours of blackberry/ mulberry fuse with notes of dark chocolate, Ribena and liquorice. The 'chocolate' spike unfolds with air, revealing cocoa bean (Mocha Kenya) an...
