Dr Mike Peterkin is the visionary behind Pierro, a thoughtful and intelligent wine maker who has pursued wine greatness from his Margaret River wines. While stepping outside many of the vineyard and winemaking norms, Peterkin has made some of Australia’s icon wines, and his wine maintains a consistent presence in the elite echelons of the Australian industry.
Positioned on a rocky, north facing slope in Wilyabrup, the premier commune of Margaret River, Pierro was conceived on what appeared to be poor land for vineyards in 1979. The vineyards were first planted in 1980, with a vision to create premium wines, particularly inspired by the Bordeaux region in France.
Pierro Wine Styles
Stylistically, Pierro pave their own unique way, however influences from Bordeaux are notable. Chardonnay is amongst Australia’s best, with focus and power reserved but built-in with cellaring in mind, Cabernet sees Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Malbec, while Peterkin is a pioneer for Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends in Australia.
Pierro is separated into Pierro estate wines and the youthful Fire Gully range, made for earlier consumption.
Mike Peterkin is a firm believer in viticulture being primary in the concerns of winemaking. The winery does host state of the art technology used in conjunction with a philosophy that combines traditional old world hands on winemaking with benefits of new world advances. Production occurs in small batches and attention to detail is paramount.
