Pikes is situated in the Polish Hill River district of Clare. The climate is considerably cooler here and soils combine to give tightly wound minerality and great longevity to the wines. Pikes pride themselves on premium table wines that reflect varietal, vintage and regional characteristics. Their philosophy involves watching over the wines during the formative stages and intervening only when necessary. The overriding aim is to produce the best possible expression of the vineyard from each particular season.
Pikes produce approximately 35,000 cases, exported to over a dozen countries around the globe. The distinctive fish logo can be found on all Pikes wines.
Pikes Location & History
Pikes winery and vineyard is located in the historic Clare Valley region of South Australia.
Englishman Henry Pike immigrated to South Australia in 1878 aboard the HMS Oakland. He established the family brewing business, H. Pike & Co in 1886. Production was focused on quality beer, soft drink and tonic ales. A motif of the English pike fish was adopted for the label and remains a symbol of Pikes' long heritage today.
Henry Pike's great grandson Edgar Walter Pike established himself in the wine industry as a private vigneron and vineyard manager. His sons Andrew and Neil have gone on to follow in their father's footsteps. Together, the two brothers established Pikes wines in 1984. Andrew is focused on viticulture and management, Neil on winemaking and marketing.
