Winemaking at Pirramimma has been a family affair for well over 100 years. Pirramimma is now under the guidance of third generation vigneron, Geoff Johnston. Geoff is a winemaker with an international perspective. He is recognized for producing Australia’s first single varietal Petit Verdot wine in 1983. It has become a well known and awarded varietal from over 10 ha of mature vines.
The Pirramimma philosophy is to produce wines entirely from its own estate vineyards, thus ensuring the highest possible quality standards are met and wines showcase the unique regional characteristics of McLaren Vale. Importantly, all wines are processed and matured on site under Geoff Johnston's personal supervision. Pirramimma's dedication to fine wine making has seen the brand grow consistently over the years and underpinned successful expansion into export markets.
Pirramimma Location & History
The Johnston family arrived in South Australia in 1839. Pirramimma was founded by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892 and has been owned and operated by the Johnston family ever since. Alexander, purchased 97 hectares of rich farmland southeast of McLaren Vale, naming it Pirramimma, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’.
Pirramimma Winery is located in the McLaren Vale wine region of South Australia. The region has a mild, Mediterranean climate tempered by cooling ocean breezes from St. Vincent’s Gulf.
