Plantagenet was the first winery in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The winery has developed an enviable reputation for producing elegant wines with complexity, finesse and balance. Plantagenet wines show the elegant spice and fruit characters for which the area is known. Winemaker, John Durham is guided in his decisions by the hallowed connection between wine and vine. Plantagenet has a firm commitment to place and time honoured tradition of wines with strong regional provenance.
Plantagenet Location & History
It was in 1968, by a stroke of serendipity that English migrant Tony Smith, himself a descendent of the Plantagenets, invested his small inheritance in a farm called Bouverie in Western Australia’s Plantagenet Shire. He first planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, followed by Riesling three years later.
Plantagenet Wines is located in the Porongurup sub region of WA’s Great Southern. It lies south of the Stirling Ranges that are one of the few places in Western Australia where snow sometimes falls.
