Rusden is a small grower come wine producer based in the Barossa Valley, utilising old plantings to create some delicious full flavoured wines.

Rusden History

In 1979 Christine and Dennis Canute purchased 40 acres of run-down vineyard in the heart of the Barossan red wine territory (at Vine Vale), with the intention principally to keep the vineyard as a sort of hobby farm, with the grapes sold on to other wineries in the area

Flash forward to 1992 and Dennis, with friend Russell, decide to make a single barrel of Cabernet Sauvignon for personal consumption. They named the wine Rusden (the shortened forms of Russell and Dennis) was born. That was 1992. In 1994 the home-made red was consumed with relish and the decision was made to carry out some serious 'research and development'.

Since then the vineyard has been retrellised and retrained in an attempt to drive the quality even further. Half the crop is still sold on to a local winery, but every year the Canute family have increased the amount of Rusden wine produced, driven now by son Christian.

Rusden Philosophy and Rusden Wine Types

To directly quote the winery:

'Take 40 acres of Vine Vale driftsand in the heart of the Barossa Valley; generations of grape growing experience; small quantities of selected fruit from old vine stocks of Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro, Zinfandel and Chenin Blanc, fully ripened in the reliable Barossa climate; combine with the passionate attention to detail of on-site, hand-crafted winemaking methods and the results are RUSDEN'S intense, luscious reds and one complex, aromatic white, which we expect will challenge you to look at the Barossa Valley through the microscope and examine the factors that make each small vineyard different in the place we know as home. We believe that Vine Vale is the most versatile and consistent grape growing district on the Barossa Valley floor.

We trial small parcels of fruit for growers from many other small micro terroir's in and around the Valley floor. It is incredibly exciting to try these wines at our post vintage tasting and compare them to our Rusden wines.
