You would be hard pressed to find a more celebrated background than that of S.C (Steve) Pannell's - look only at his family for starters. Steve's father Bill founded iconic Margaret River producer Moss Wood many moons ago, before going on to then found celebrated Pemberton winery Picardy, which is now run (with father Bill) by Steve's brother Dan.
Steve is no slouch himself either, being Chief Red Winemaker at Hardys (in it's heyday) as well as working vintages at such celebrated international wineries as Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Burgundy, Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and G.D. Vajra in Barolo. Other highlights in Steve's career include winning the title of International Red Winemaker of the Year, winning a Jimmy Watson and two Schubert trophies and being listed as one of the 50 most influential contributors to the world of wine by Decanter Magazine.
S.C. Pannell Winemaking
Like many modern winemaking operations, the S.C. Panell winery is what is known as a 'virtual winery' - that is, owning no physical winery (and often no physical vineyards) - instead utilising contract growers and someone else's winery space to craft the wines. The good thing about this sort of arrangement is that costs can be lower whilst wine standards remain high, similarly allowing for absolute flexibility in the face of challenging vintages (or grape sourcing opportunities for that matter).
S.C. Pannell Wine Types
The best way to describe the S.C. Pannell range is eclectic. Fabulously so. These wines include a Barossan Mataro/Grenache/Shiraz/Touriga blend, a Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling/Pinot Gris blend as well as more traditional wines such as an Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc, Mclaren Vale Grenache, Shiraz, Shiraz/Grenache blend and an all conquering Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo.
""Steve Pannell and his wife Fiona, are kicking up their heels after their wine Bushing Festival win at McLaren Vale at the weekend. He was crowned for his 2010 Tempranillo Touriga, an unusual blend for the Shiraz - hugging wine makers of McLaren Vale. "
""McLaren Vale-based Stephen Pannell is thankful his region enjoys a Mediterranean climate perfect for grenache and tempranillo. He's masterful with both, as proved by his S.C. Pannell range." -November 15, 2011 - Emissaries of taste - theage.com.au
