Savaterre makes intensely focused, individualistic wines far removed from the mainstream. Keppell Smith looks to the winemaking and viticulture of the old world for inspiration. Minimal intervention, patience and long, slow elevage in cool dark cellars are the cornerstones of the Savaterre winemaking philosophy.
The Savaterre vineyard is elevated at 440m above sea level and farmed according to organic principles. A unique combination of ancient, low cropping soils, climate and viticulture provides Savaterre with fruit of the very highest quality. Savaterre produces excellent Chardonnay and vibrant, highly expressive Pinot Noir that speaks of its terroir.
Savaterre Location & History
Savaterre is nestled in the picturesque region of Beechworth in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. The region is emerging as a strong presence in the world of wine.
Owner and winemaker, Keppell Smith discovered Savaterre vineyard in 1996. He hit on the magical terroir combination of mild summer days and cool climate elevation after an extensive search of Australia’s quality wine regions. The long growing season in Beechworth means grapes develop outstanding depth of flavor.
Savaterre Wine Styles & Labels
Les Enfants are made in years when quality demands declassification of fruit from the estate wine labels. The Q.E.D. pinot noir is born from close planted, young vine vineyards. Q.E.D. is Latin for quod erat demonstrandum, meaning that which was to be proved.
