Stephen Shelmerdine is no stranger to the wine industry. His family founded Mitchelton Wines in 1969, and he has been around the industry for 20 years or more himself. He founded Shelmerdine in 1989 and has 120 hectares of vines in Heathcote and the Yarra Valley.
There are three vineyards that produce the fruit for the Shelmerdine wines. Merindoc and Willoughby Bridge vineyards in Heathcote, and the rising star vineyard of the Yarra Valley Lusatia Park. Stephen takes a ‘hands on’ approach with the vines to ensure the grapes consistently achieve a high quality and speak of their regionality.
Renowned winemaker Steve Webber of De Bortoli is responsible for carrying out the Shelmerdine philosophy; to craft wines that express the climate, landscape and character of the valleys and hills on which they grow. The wines are under the labels of Shelmerdine, The Hat and Phi using varietals such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
