This secret agent of the Marlborough region infiltrated our shores in the early 2000s, and has continued to be one of the New Zealand’s best known producers ever since. Established in 1993 by Bryan and Jan Johnson, it is named after satellite communications monitoring station, in short a spy base, located near by.
The Vineyards
This family owned winery has over 380 acres of vines in one big vineyard located in the lower Waihopai Valley on the terraces of the Omaka River. It is planted with ten varietals that include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.
The Wines
Chief Winemaker Paul Bourgeois prides himself on making world class wines. He focuses on making cool climate aromatic whites and distinctly regional Pinot Noir. The collaboration between the winemaking team and the viticultural team is key to the success of Spy Valley to maintain not only the wine style, but also the future direction of the wines.
