Star Lane is a small, family run cool climate vineyard planted at Beechworth in the cooler reaches of North East Victoria focused on full bodied Merlot and Shiraz. Brett Barnes is the viticulturist with his wife Liz the winemaker.
Star Lane Vineyard
The Star Lane vineyard was first established in 1997, with 5 acres of Merlot and 5 acres of Shiraz planted on a unique, undulating slope sitting at approximately 450m above sea level.
The secret as to why the wines produced from this property are so good is simply down to hands on viticulture. Serious attention is given to canopy management and yields are kept exceptionally low, with cropping levels of just 1.8t to the acre.
Star Lane Winemaking
It's all artisan winemaking here, beginning with hand picked fruit which is crushed and wild fermented (in open wooden fermenters), before being basket pressed and finished off in fine French oak. The production of this little winery is just 1600 cases total, so everything is hands on.
The wineries secret weapon perhaps lies in its winemaking consultant, with superstar wine man Rick Kinzbrunner (of Giaconda) lending a hand since the initial vintage in 2005.
Star Lane Wine Types
There are 2 wines in the Star Lane range: Shiraz and Merlot. Both are built in a serious, full bodied and firm style, with long fine tannins and real complexity. In years to come a Nebbiolo and Sangiovese are expected to be added to the range as well.
