Founded in 2004 by winemakers Don Lewis and Narelle King, the Tar & Roses name reflects the descriptors for the Nebbiolo grape varietal, mainly found in Italian Barolo. It is the grape varietals and wines of Italy, Spain and Australia that shape their wines.
The Winemakers
Don & Narelle have led interesting lives. Narelle was originally an accountant, but after traveling the world, she gained her wine science degree at CSU. They made wine together for many years at Mitchelton wines, where Don was fortunate enough to be assistant winemaker to the legendary Colin Preece. Both made wine in the Priorat region of Spain and continue to be inspired by the area.
The Wines
Varietals like Pinot Gris, Shiraz, Tempranillo and Sangiovese are used to make the wines of Tar & Roses. The fruit comes from various Central Victorian regions, and the wine styles are not exactly mainstream. They tend to be elegant, balanced and complex with hints of euro-centric savouriness.
