Villa Maria History
Villa Maria was first setup by George Fistonich in 1961, with George starting off with just half a hectare at Mangere, Auckland. He started well however, winning his first Easter Show medal in 1962. During the 1970's the company expanded further, with the winery eventually becoming one of NZ's largest (and most awarded).
Villa Maria Vineyards
Whilst the winery itself was originally setup in Auckland, the real vineyard growth has been in Marlborough. Villa Maria also sources grapes from Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, with a small amount still coming from the vineyards around Auckland (notably geuwrtztraminer).
The finest grapes (and the finest wines) in the Villa Maria range come from a selection of single vineyards, including Rutherford, Waldron, Taylors Pass, Seddon and Maxwell in Marlborough, Twyford Gravels, Keltern, Omahu Gravels and Waikahu in Hawkes Bay and Ihumatao in Auckland.
Villa Maria Wine Team
One of the strengths of the Villa Maria brand is the consistency of it's wines, driven forward by a wine production team renowned for it's talent. Head of this is Alastair Maling, one of only a handful of NZ winemakers with the prestigious MW title, supported by a brace of local talent including George Gregis (Winestate New Zealand Winemaker of the year 2007) along with the former Cloudy Bay viticulturist Michael Croad.
Villa Maria Wine Types
The Villa Maria range is split into four main tiers (with distinctive coloured labelling) with some odd 'research releases' that are largely cellar door products. The base tier (and the most popular) is the Private Bin, followed by the Cellar Selection, Reserve and then the single vineyard wines. All of the wines are regionally identified, with the Private Bin the great volume driver. As for varietals and styles, these ranges include Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, along with Hawkes Bay Viognier, Merlot/Cabernet and Syrah and Auckland Gewurtztraminer. The real glory though is in the single vineyard wines, which are well made to say the least.

Is Pinot Gris the great white hope for New Zealand after the flood of Sauvignon Blanc? If it tastes as good as this then we’d happily do a swap for a while. Fruit comes from Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Marlborough to create a wine with texture and fi...
