White Wines in New South Wales
Aromas of ripe berry and spiced fruit cake dominate, with rich savoury plum, chinese plums and concentrated Ribena cordial adding further complexity. Savoury plums, spiced cherry and plum pudding characters ensure the wine is full bodied but perfectly balanced, finishing crisp and clean.
What a cracking wine this is - a lovely mature Hunter Valley Semillon now at its (first) peak and looking fine. What makes it so special is that lovely mix of acidity vs fruit and bottle age induced richness, making for a wine that is both refreshing and creamy. Much to love.
Excellent, luminous green/yellow colour. A super vintage and more ripe flavours than we are used to, however makes for a very flavoursome Semillon. Very good colour lime and citrus lift (slight lemongrass) balanced palate. Food - Asian, soups and light meat dishes.
A classic Hunter Valley Semillon showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus fruit flavours. This wine is beginning to display toasty bottle aged complexity.
Excellent, bright green/yellow colour, still youthful. The aromas do not show a lot of development with lemongrass and tlc Semillon fruit. Entry onto the palate shows clean, zesty citrus fruit and just a hint of softer nutty development. The vanillin edge is the precursor to the classic 'toast' that aged Hunter Semillon develops. A long finish with lime acid fruit flavours. Food - Asian, soups and light meat dishes.
Still pale green/yellow in colour with lifted talc/lanolin aromas. On release at 5 years of age just starting to show traditional Hunter Valley Semillon toast. Hunter Semillon is traditionally low in alcohol however the palate takes on a richness and depth that is unique to the region's premier white style. Often confused as an oak character the rich flavour is just from the aging. This can often have a lime juice edge. A perfect accompaniment to heavier seafood dishes or white meats. Food - Asian food, any seafood especially fresh shucked oysters.
Cornflower and soap aromas are still evident with a tight lemony / minerally palate. Still quite restrained but starting to develop into a fuller bodied style with honeyed characters. Very structured palate, with great depth and breadth of flavour.
A classic Hunter Valley semillon showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus fruit flavours. This wine is beginning to display toasty bottle aged complexity.
This Reserve Semilon is just starting to produce those soft toast and butter elements that aged Hunter Valley Semillon is prized for.
The wine is floral fruit in youth, which moves towards biscuity characters with age. The palate is generally softer bodied with smoother acids than the Vat 1 and Belford Semillon.
Excellent, luminous green/yellow colour. Lifted zesty, lemongrass aromas with some sweet apple blossom characters. Fruit dominant on the palate but typical tight structure with citrus acid finish. Initial lime plus cut grass flavours. Perfect balance of fruit, alcohol and acid. An impressive drink now or leave for more 'toasty' development. Food - Asian food, any seafood especially fresh shucked oysters.
Still a pup in the scheme of Hunter Semillon, this has lovely classic bottle age toastiness over a typically stout, green apple flavoured palate. Classically proportioned Semillon that is right in the zone. Yum.
A classic Hunter semillon showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus honey flavours. With age, it further develops honey characters but maintains its natural fresh acid.
Pale green to gold in colour. The aroma is a combination of classic lime citrus fruit complexed by a hint of toasty development. The palate is just starting to show the benefits of bottle age, with honeyed, toasty notes emerging from a soft, well-rounded structure. As always with this style, the wine retailns its tight minerally backbone and finishes with a clean, refreshing mouth-feel.
Excellent, luminous green/yellow colour. Lifted zesty, lemongrass aromas with some sweet apple blossom characters. Fruit dominant on the palate but typical tight structure with citrus acid finish. Initial lime plus cut grass flavours. Food - Asian food, any seafood especially fresh shucked oysters.
Still pale green/yellow in colour with lifted blossom and citrus notes release at 5 years of age just starting to show Hunter Valley Semillon hay/toast. Hunter Semillon is traditionally low in alcohol however the palate takes on richness and depth that is unique to the regions premier white style. Often confused as an oak character the rich flavour is just from the aging. This can often have a lime juice edge with a long, clean finish. An impressive Semillon from a year that will reward drinking now or further cellaring.
Excellent, luminous green/yellow colour at 4 years of age. Lifted zesty, lemongrass aromas with some sweet apple blossom characters. Fruit dominant on the palate but typical tight structure with citrus acid finish. Initial lime plus cut grass flavours but starting to soften with vanillin/lanolin flavours. Food - Asian food, any seafood especially fresh shucked oysters.
With 5 years of bottle age this wine is just starting to exhibit those complex characters that Hunter Valley Semillon is famous for. Toasty, vanillan hints wrapped around a strong acid backbone are typical of the style as it ages when made from Lower Hunter fruit. Still enough citrus fruit and mineral finish to balance out the emerging middle palate and to reward further cellaring. This wine was sealed with a screw cap to ensure consistency.
Nose: This wine is already showing classic secondary characters of toast and honey along with lanolin on the nose. Palate: The palate is fruit pure, with loads of flavour, crisp acidity but still balanced and long.
Only made when conditions are ideal, this is a great Hunter semillon, crisp, fresh and vibrant in youth and excellent potential.
