David and Heather aim to create wines that emulate the great vineyards of Bordeaux. Woodlands came to fame early on with the release of the1981 Andrew Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was the first to achieve a National Red Wine Trophy from the Margaret River region. Woodlands have now won subsequent awards and critical acclaim for their Cabernet Sauvignon and single vineyard wines.
Woodlands have an annual production of 8000 cases, specializing in fine red wine. Minimalist winemaking at Woodlands is focused on small open ferments and excellent barrel selection. The vineyards consist primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blending varieties including cabernet franc and merlot. Each variety is planted in a particular location according to soil and aspect of the plot. All vines are dry grown and farmed using traditional and biodynamic methods.
Woodlands Location & History
Woodlands is a boutique ten hectare vineyard located in the Wilyabrup Valley of Margaret River. It was established in 1973 by David & Heather Watson and was one of the first five vineyards planted in the Margaret River wine region. Woodlands has also produced wine from a second vineyard, Woodlands Brook since 2008. This vineyard is situated north east of the primary vineyard, all of which are family operated.
