Mornington Peninsula

Mornington Peninsula is a cool, southerly region of elegant wine surrounded on three sides by stunning coastal waters and beaches. Just south of Melbourne, the Peninsula extends out into Bass Strait, flanked by the Port Phillip and Western Port Bays. Chardonnay and pinot noir are the heroes here. Chardonnay is the brightest star and comes in a range of styles featuring natural acid balance and finesse. Pinot noir is medium bodied and subtle, with good varietal character. Aromatic pinot gris has emerged with great success and spicy, cool climate shiraz is gaining ground.

The Mornington Peninsula has a history of wine production dating back to the 1880s, with modern commercial viticulture growing significantly since the 1970s. The district is home to over 50 boutique wineries and 700 ha under vine. The region enjoys plentiful sunshine and coastal breezes. A long ripening season is one of the benefits of the cool maritime climate. There are a variety of sandy soils, duplex clays and fertile red volcanics in the district.

With gorgeous seaside resorts like Portsea and picturesque rural villages, Mornington Peninsula is a popular getaway for Melbournites. The towns of Dromana, Mornington, Red Hill South, Merricks and Moorooduc make a great base for exploring the wineries.
