Robe

Robe is a young wine growing region extending along South Australia’s rugged Limestone coastline between the townships of Robe and Beachport. With the natural advantage of a cool maritime climate, fruit from the area is yielding spectacular results. Wines from Robe are deeply coloured, succulent and powerful. They have finely tuned tannins, inherent elegance and natural acid tension. The region has earned a first-rate reputation for shiraz with supple raspberry and spiced pepper characters. Cabernet sauvignon shows earthy tobacco, blackcurrant, and minty tones. Elegant chardonnay and punchy sauvignon blanc tangy minerality with citrus and green apple fruits.

Established by Penfolds in 1994, Robe’s first vineyard has now been joined by a host of other promising sites. There is a diversity of soil types in the region, including sandy loams and calcareous dunes, weathered rendzina, limestone, and terra rossa. The climate is strongly influenced by the Southern ocean and nearby lake system. Vines are protected from coastal winds by the Woakwine Range.

The famous fishing village of Robe is renowned for southern rock lobster and great surfing breaks. Each year, leisure seekers and city dwellers flock to catch the Summer sun and surf on the 17km stretch of Long Beach.
