Red - Grenache
Grenache is planted extensively around the world. The variety is native to Spain where it performs particularly well in Rioja and Priorat. It is grown throughout southern France and plays an important role in the Rhone Valley where it is blended with many other varieties. Grenache is a late ripening grape suited to warm, dry conditions and produces relatively high alcohol wines.
In Australia, it is frequently paired with shiraz and mourvedre in the quintessential GSM blend and makes fleshy rosé and fortified styles. Good examples hail from South Australia’s Barossa Valley. As a single varietal, grenache produces supple wines with juicy red berries, strawberry and attractive spicy flavours.
