White - Chardonnay
Early chardonnay vineyards originate in the French regions of Burgundy and Champagne. First arriving on Australian shores with the James Busby collection in 1832, it is now the most widely planted white grape variety in the country, making up 48% of total white production.
Chardonnay is a versatile grape that adapts well to a range of sites and climates. It is acknowledged to be the finest white variety in the world, ranging through fresh medium-bodied styles to rich, full-bodied examples.
Primary characters include citrus, melon and stone fruit. Sophisticated cool climate styles show vibrant lemon, apple and grapefruit flavours with subtle oak integration and spice. These are elegant wines with soft textural elements and complexity from lees stirring, fermentation and maturation techniques. Warmer inland areas reveal riper wines with peach and apricot flavours in the tropical fruit spectrum. Chardonnay also forms the basis for many of Australia’s top sparkling wines.
