Deep purple red in colour with black hues. Aromas of red cherry, cloves, violets, dark chocolate, sweet vanilla, black pepper and blueberries. A multi layered generous and complex wine. The dark chocolate and red berries flow richly onto the palate combining with complex savoury oak that paves the way for a seamless finish. Excellent balance of flavour, acid and tannin.

Gemtree is biodynamically farmed and certified organic. It’s owned by the Buttery family, with the help of recent Chinese investment. The founders’ daughter Melissa is vineyard manager and her husband Mike Brown is winemaker. This wine is a classic example of the great buys that abound from the superb 2010 vintage. The colour is deep with black tinges and a purple rim; the aromas are of blackberry, dark plum and violets, with a lick of discreet toasty, savoury oak. There are spices galore throughout the wine. In the mouth, concentration is the key word. It’s a quite muscular wine of density, fleshy texture, drying tannins and a long finish. Drink now to 2025. 14.5 per cent alcohol.
Food: all red meats, especially grilled and barbecued. Also hard cheeses such as parmesan, pecorino, Pyrenees brebis, comte and cheddar.
