2007 Penfolds Bin 95 Grange

RRP:$0.00
6 x 750ml Bottles
Cracka Review
From a particularly dry vintage in South Australia, this full bodied and powerful Grange is something of a closed beast, a firm and extractive wine with serious concentration and intensity. Long term wine, no question about it.

Winemaker's Note
An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert.

Penfolds Grange is the quality standard against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a mature Grange, 15 to 20 years old, in fine condition, is one of the great wine experiences.

COLOUR - As a five year-old, dense vivid red—impenetrable almost to the rim.

NOSE - Unmistakably Grange—formic, ripe, pungent, confronting. Core: darker elements—soy/cola/peat/coal-dust/Dutch black liquorice with sesame/sea-weed/quince paste. Beneath: coffee-grind/mocha/bitter chocolate (from oak?). Above: African spices coupled with a fleeting and appealing glacial waft.

PALATE - At once, balanced and accessible; fresh and tight. A structural and textural continuum—no beginning or end, no gaps. Complete. In an attempt to define the palate profile... Flavours: dates, persimmon, roasted nuts … freshly baked pecan-pie/Portuguese custard tart. Oak: omnipresent, yet neither prominent nor ostentatious—completely assimilated. Tannins: neither obstructive nor aggressive, yet effortlessly conveying flavours. Yes, maturation of 21 months in barrel and three years in bottle, has moulded quite the structural and tactile Grange package.

“Aromatically captivating/convincing— similar to the 1987 in its formative years, stronger than the 1997!”

“Already complete... easily the key Penfolds wine from the 2007 South Australian vintage. As it should be!”

Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker
Cracka Contributors' Reviews
A big, bold and impressive Grange with the typical core of Barossa blueberry fruit lifted by creamy sweet American oak. Tannins and oak are yet to integreate making this a wine that needs another 5 to 10 years before hitting its straps. That said, grainy tannins and intense fruit flavours will see it flower with age.

Other Reviews
Penfolds is the most recognised name in Australian wines, offering a ton of affordable styles, yet Grange fascinates drinkers as Mount Everest does climbers. The style has undergone evolutionary changes from its initial launch in the Max Schubert years when it was a big, slightly extracted sweet-fruited wine that developed a lot of chocolaty secondary flavours. During the mid 1970s under Don Ditter, the wines gained freshness while still in the traditional Penfolds background extract and big rich chocolaty styles. Changes between 1981 and 1986 with Daryl Groom and John Duval saw the big, sweet fruit style rapidly gain additional freshness and varietal purity with the tannins becoming finer compared to the previous decades and adopting a more modern style, leaving some of the old fashioned Penfolds? family oak and tannins behind. Under Peter Gago striving for freshness within the template has continued.

2007 is a thoroughly worthy Grange and an outstanding expression of a hot drought year, albeit the least vintage of Grange since 2003. The season is generally characterised by the drying tannin finish of drought stressed vines, but it is a credit to Penfolds' fruit sources and winemaking polish that this deficiency is but a subtle suggestion here. A dense, viscous core of vibrant black fruit swirls with layers of signature Grange exoticity: black olives, soy, balsamic, crushed ants, cedar, liquorice and dark chocolate, lingering silky, seamless and mesmerisingly persistent. This will not be a long-lived wine by Grange standards, but it calls for least a decade to bring down an impenetrable wall of Penfolds tannins. 97% shiraz and 3% cabernet from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate.

An outstanding expression of a hot drought year, this will not be a long-lived wine by Grange standards but it's loaded with every bit of exotic density that defines Grange.

Wine 100 Reviews, April
A very contemporary, richly fruited and opulent Grange that is already very smooth and approachable. It's very ripe and perfumed, scented with meaty aromas of cassis, blackberries, dates and figs knit with sweet, fine-grained mocha-like oak. Long, sweetly flavoured and backed by gamey complexity, it drips with intense, sumptuous fruit handsomely integrated with oak and polished, pliant tannins. With time it should more closely resemble the classical Grange benchmark.

The Australian Wine Annual 2013
A three-way sourcing between the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate, this is a 98% shiraz, 2% cabernet sauvignon blend matured in new American oak hogsheads for 21 months. There s deep-seated richness and ripeness here, with trademark American oak, some vanillin too, licorice and a sense of real ripeness and strongly concentrated fruit _ some wet concrete too. The palate s very dense and settled, very mellow, not a brute, almost elegant, but not blessed with freshness or vibrancy. The wine s in style: it has density and concentration, some black fruits and dark spices, plums, dark cherry, red fruits linger. It s Grange all right, from a tough year.

Good Wine Guide
Full crimson, with a purple rim; a 98/2% blen of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon that exudes power and authority; the bouquet is already complex, the American oak making an impact as it always does when Grange is in its youth, the palate with multiple layers of predominantly black fruits; the tannins, like the oak, need to soften, and should do so well before the fruit starts to fade. Follows the Grange pattern, with 21 months in the 100% new American oak in which it finished its fermentation. A good Grange, but not a very good/great one.
