$149 Cracka Premium Red Dozen

RRP: $23.17
12 x 750ml Bottles
Cracka Review
Here's a red wine collective to get the taste buds racing. Most of the wines here are full-bodied and curvaceous, the Christina Hendricks of wines. But there is one that stands out from the crowd and is a bit more Anne Hathaway, a pinot noir from Central Otago. Whatever your preference - Christina or Anne - you'll find it here. Each wine would not be out of place at the dinner table for any occasion.

Please note: Occasionally we may substitute some wines with a wine of equal value.

Zonte's Footstep
Zonte's Footstep is the brainchild of Barossa based winemaking superstar Ben Riggs, in conjunction with marketing guru Zar Brooks. The label itself is something of a 'virtual' one, with the fruit sourced from growers in Langhorne Creek, the Fleurieu Peninsula and the Barossa Valley, with it made into wine at a contract winery. The advantage of this sort of arrangement is that drives the costs of production down dramatically, particularly in these times of oversupply. The net result is ultimately better value wines. Zonte's Footstep Wine Styles Zonte's Footstep produces a range of imaginatively labelled wines included a 'Savignin Blanc' (a Savagnin), a Verdelho, Pinot Grigio, Viognier, a Sangiovese Barbera blend, a Malbec, a Shiraz Viognier, a Cabernet and a Barossan Shiraz.

2010 Zonte's Footstep Avalon Tree Cabernet

RRP: $23.95
2 x 750ml Bottles
Winemaker's Note

Colour: Deep purple – and when we say deep purple we mean deep purple with a regal purple hue.

Nose: Scented blueberries, then rolling smells of blackcurrants over rhubarb, rhubarb and thrice rhubarb smells and a little French oak cedar and clotted cream.

Palate: Direct, full and fine and precise Cabernet softness. A perfect Cabernet entry. Alert bright fruit. No callow Cabernet middle but instead rich soft mouth filling fruit, especially cassis and cedar. Juicy round blackberry sweetness, tempered with some taught but typical Cabernet tannin. Wonderful cigar box and supple fruit flavour but properly taught tannin. Intense and complex but with a lightness of red fruit flavour, which is surprising for such a full on wine.

This wine hangs about after you have tasted it for so long it seems almost self defeating, although you want another sip it is still in the mouth. Precise ‘line and length’ that lingers on and on with blackcurrant. Unctuous interesting complex but still will the fruit fullness of youth. Minutes later, the flavour still lingers. This is the eighth consecutive vintage of Zonte’s Cabernet and though it will drink great now, especially with any full flavoured meat based dishes, it will undoubtedly cellar well as previous vintages.

2010 Soul Growers Provident Shiraz

RRP: $24.95
2 x 750ml Bottles
Cracka Review
This wine has 'Soul' that James Brown would appreciate bursting with the kind of character and dark berry fruit that only the Barossa Valley can muster. Full throttle but never losing its way it is a classic Barossa style, topping many big names that are five times the price.

Winemaker's Note
Soul Growers Provident Shiraz – ancient, eternal, persistent, relentless, pure Barossa.

The fore fathers of the region had either a grand vision, or simple luck to plant Shiraz in the Barossa. It’s been and continues to be the very essence of our region and will remain an iconic variety representing some of the oldest vineyards and highest pedigree wines that adorns many of the fine cellars and wine lists of the world. The very Soul of the region.

Aged in older American oak hogsheads for 24 months from thirteen vineyards this wine has depth, richness and elegance. This wine will age 10 years plus.

2011 Fush n Chups Central Otago Pinot Noir

RRP: $22.00
2 x 750ml Bottles
Cracka Review
From our friends that brought us the Fush n Chups Sauvignon Blanc comes the new Central Otago Pinot Noir - a lovely bright and juicy little number that is glowing with very pretty fruit and backed with fine silky Pinot tannins. So much Pinoty joy in this light red, but backed with enough structure to make this a serious wine.
Cracka Wine Rating
Winemaker's Note
This Pinot Noir comes from a selection of vineyards in Central Otago, including the Alexandra and Lowburn districts. The vineyards are carefully managed with shoot and leaf removal to aid in ripening, and crop thinning to increase concentration and flavour. The grapes were both handpicked and mechanically harvested.

Each parcel of fruit from the selected vineyards were processed separately in open top fermenters. Cold soaked prior to primary fermentation the parcels then underwent an extended maceration before a gentle pressing into a mixture of new and seasoned French barriques. Each parcel was then lightly fined, prior to blending and subsequently lightly filtered.

This deep red pinot has notes of red plum and berry fruits on the nose. Its ripe red fruit flavours complemented by oak, intensify on the palate with hints of cherry and liquorice, delivering a long supple finish.
Cracka Contributors' Reviews
At first this looks light and simple but with every sip it looks that little more serious and deeper. A tasty light bodied Central Otago that just needs more time in the bottle to really shows its goodies.

A very pretty Pinot Noir from Central Otago – bright ruby red with floral red cherry fruit that is mid weight finishing silky and long with earthy/spicy complexity. Brilliant value for the price.

2010 Picante Espana Gran Meseta Tempranillo Shiraz

RRP: $16.99
2 x 750ml Bottles
Winemaker's Note
A dark and rich red colour is followed by an expansive nose showing case bright, ripe berry aromas and dusty spice. The palate is lively and very much fruit driven, beginning with a rush of juicy, supply red berry flavours before being wrapped in fine grained tannins. The intensity, structure and length is remarkable for a wine of this price.

Picante Espana Awards & Accolades

The affordable Spanish wine juggernaut continues apace. Dark cherry, strawberry, sage, a little spice and toast. Medium bodied, the flavour leans more towards the strawberry side and there’s some nutty and tarry elements here too. Fine acid, light but appropriate tannin, perhaps not a lot of depth, though certainly it makes for a nice drink. Has good line and a satisfying finish. I think we can get to 90 points here, all things considered. A good and interesting wine.'

From Don Quixote country in central Spain, this bargain-priced red puts some other Spanish imports to shame in value terms. The nose has a rustic, earthy charm that's very Iberian, and a core of plummy fruit, fruit-cakey spice, and leathery complexity keeps the interest going. It's smooth and ripe in the mouth, medium-bodied and complete, dry and lightly grippy at the end. A crowd-pleaser at a great price.

2010 Legless Frog Cotes du Rhone Red Blend

RRP: $20.00
2 x 750ml Bottles
Cracka Review
Now here is a great discovery that landed on the Cracka doorstep - a juicy, meaty, authentic Cotes du Rhone built utilising the classic blend of Grenache and Shiraz (or Syrah as it might be). Meaty, peppery, juicy and just plain addictive, this lovely savoury French red is just begging to come along on your next picnic. As the name suggests, this may even be a decent match for Les cuisses de grenouilles (frogs legs) too... who's keen to try?
Cracka Wine Rating
Winemaker's Note
Deep ruby red with a nose of dark brambles and spicy peppercorn. A vibrant, complex & delicious wine which is excellent drinking now and a great partner to cassoulet, fried chicken, steak au poivre, Summer BBQ’s, Roast Chicken, turkey sandwiches… & any form of revelry.

Great value, on a par with that of Houghton Margaret River Cabernet of the same vintage, the latter a better wine, but (naturally) more expensive; here fragrant and breezy cassis is woven through with fine tannins on the light-to medium-bodied palate, and a touch of oak also appears.
