This is a region of vineyards set in a quiet valley of creeks, lakes and billabongs along the Goulburn River. The countryside is scattered with apple, pear and stone fruit orchards amongst the vines. Goulburn Valley is recognised for earthy shiraz in a full flavoured and savoury style. Wines from the cool Nagambie Lakes sub region show the greatest finesse, while those from warmer areas further north are more generous. Marsanne is the region’s distinctive white. It makes nutty lemon and honeysuckle scented wines with great longevity. The historic Tahbilk winery is credited with the world’s oldest and largest single holding of marsanne plantings. Buttery chardonnay, rich cabernet sauvignon, spicy viognier and riesling are also important.
The upper Goulburn is one of five regions that make up the central Victorian wine zone. It lies 180km north of Melbourne, with the towns of Shepparton, Echuca, Murchison and Seymour at its heart. This is an historically important district, with the earliest vineyard plantings dating back to 1860. Over 1,500 ha of vineyard are now situated primarily in or near Nagambie Lakes in the south or further north with access to the Murray. The inland region enjoys a continental climate of warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Altitudes of 300-500 metres and proximity to lakes, waterways and lagoons have a welcome cooling effect. They are also an abundant source of irrigation. Soils in the district consist chiefly of sandy/clay loams and red, iron rich soils over ancient alluvials and gravels.
The glorious Nagambie Lakes are comprised of six distinct lakes and lagoons stretching for almost 2,500 ha.
