About Craggy Range Winery
Craggy Range is the vision of Australian transport magnate Terry Peabody, in conjunction with NZ Master of Wine Steve Smith, with the partnership yielding one of the most dynamic wine businesses in NZ. Craggy Range wins prestigious global wine award: Wine Enthusiast Magazine names Craggy Range its 2014 New World Winery of the Year. Hawke’s Bay’s Craggy Range Winery has taken out the New World Winery category at the prestigious Wine Enthusiast magazine’s Wine Star Awards, a remarkable accolade so early in the wine producer’s odyssey. Wine Enthusiast Magazine was founded in 1988 and with 800,000 readers is regarded as the world’s largest periodical devoted exclusively to wine and spirits. Craggy Range History Craggy Range is a family owned winery established in 1997. It is situated in the shadow of the spectacular Te Mata Peak in the premium wine growing area of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Based on the single vineyard philosophy of winemaking, Craggy Range was the first in the Southern Hemisphere to make single vineyard wines from multiple New Zealand regions with grape varieties matched to place. The winery produces a portfolio of quality wines including the iconic Prestige and Family collections, as well as Limited Editions all reflecting the place and the people. The grapes, grown in exceptional winery-owned New Zealand estate vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, Martinborough and Marlborough, are selected for their special soils and unique climates producing wines of character, quality and authority. Craggy Range Vineyards Craggy Range source fruit from some 9 different single vineyards, spanning from the cool southern climes of Central Otago right through to the warmer vineyard sites in Hawkes Bay. The main vineyard is undoubtedly the 100ha Gimblett Gravels property, source of much of Craggy's Bordeaux styled reds and it's Syrah. Another vineyard of a larger scale is the 94ha Te Muna road vineyard at Martinborough (planted to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir). Craggy Range Philosophy The aim of the team at Craggy Range is to make single-vineyard wines – wines that are true expressions of the vineyard’s terroir, with an ambition to make these the finest wines in the land. Craggy Range Wine Types There are some 30 wines in the Craggy Range portfolio, with a focus on Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The highlights of the range are the Les Beaux Cailloux Chardonnay, Le Sol Syrah and 'The Quarry' Cabernet/Merlot blend.
