2011 Logan Cabernet Merlot Rob Geddes MW 85
  • The wines of Logan get us excited. While based in Mudgee the Logan’s source the majority of their fruit from Orange and have helped put the Central Ranges back on the map thanks to superbly crafted wines. The fruit for this blend was sourced from the elevated vineyards of Orange, so you get nothing but wine with altitude. If you like a red that’s full of concentrated berries and chocolate with hints of earth then here’s the one. The plate delivers on the promise with summer berries, notes of tobacco and persistent finish.

  • The Logan 2011 Cabernet Merlot is a deep red colour with aromas of blackberry, violet, dark chocolate, rosemary and tobacco. These continue onto the round palate which also shows raspberry, thyme and fresh earth, soft tannins and a long finish.
  • Rob Geddes MW says:

Cranberry cabernet with black tea and herb aromas. The light bodied paalte is cassis pepery and subtle with red fruit to start and a firm finsh.

Rob Geddes MW (2010 Vintage) says:

Black currant vanilla biscuit like aromas looking very elegant and well balanced with a focus on fruit aromas. low tannin fresh fruit, black currant raspberry, cranberry mid palate and a very dry finish.

    James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says:

A fresh, light-to medium-bodied wine with pleasing redcurrant, blackcurrant and plum fruit, with just enough tannin and oak support to provide some texture and complexity.

    Campbell Mattinson (2009 Vintage) says:

The back labels of Logan wines come complete with pithy observations. This one says: You Complete Me, said the Cabernet to the Merlot. This is a nice style of cabernet. Midweight but fresh and juicy - and not afraid of tannin. It tastes of pencils and chocolate, briary blackcurrant and dried herbs. Attractive, even ripeness. Vibrant length. It may well be the best Logan wine I’ve tried.

    Nick Stock (2008 Vintage) says:

This carries a classic cabernet nose of herbs, leaves and cassis, with some deeper mulberry fruit and chocolate too - all very fresh and true to type. The palate's big on drinkability, with bright cassis and purple-berry flavours, hints of cocoa and lithe, juicy tannins. More drink now than cellaring material.

    James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says:

Bright crimson; a fresh and bright wine with a posy of red fruits on the bouquet and medium-bodied palate; superfine tannins are on the money.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says:

Logan is a small winery making a lot of good moves. Good luck to them, we say. It's a cool-climate style of wine, so don't go looking for big, bruising flavours. It's smooth and medium-bodied with flavours of fennel, blackberry, dark chocolate and fragrant dried herbs. There are some regional gumleaf characters on offer here too. Some tannin, but not a great deal. Just a good, solid, cool-climate red all round.

    James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says:

Dark and quite savoury, with real extract and plenty of vibrant fruit on the finish.

    Nick Stock (2006 Vintage) says:

This impresses with an overlay of slick swanky oak, spices and fragrant vanilla, fresh brambly berries are working below. The palate follows suit with musky oak and sweet bright berry fruits, some vanillin across the finish; elegant, young and bright, it makes a modern impression.

Light- to medium-bodied, but has good intensity and length; blackcurrant, black olive, cassis, earth and spice are all interwoven through the long palate.
