      • He's a smart winemaker is Alex Retief, epitomising the sort of switched on 'let's think outside the square' style winemaking that so many clever young Australian producers are currently adopting. Fitting that Alex went for a variety that is entirely uncommon in the Hilltops - Mataro, and crafting it in a sort of dark and savoury, anything-but-flashy, mysterious, moist undergrowth and cool meaty notes style that is not going to please everyone but provides a welcome relief for anyone tired of big sweet reds. It's almost an intellectual wine even, or at least just a clever one. Tasty stuff in a rather young, firm and masculine brooding form.

      • Mataro is also commonly known as Mouvedre of Monastrel and while researching any differences in the styles made under each moniker I found it has about 50 other names for the same varietal! Some of the better ones were English Colossal and Estrangle-Chien, or Dog Strangler; hence the name “The Alias”. The nose is deep and brambly, full of red-currants and fruits, while the palate grows with a smokey – savoury backbone and a rich, full mouth-feel, continuing on with a long, lingering finish. I am really proud of this wine and I know you will enjoy it!!

“… black fruited; inky, savoury with some regional pepper in there too. Incredibly smooth entry, the palate bound up with some Dutch licorice, black strap molasses and spice. Complex, yet balanced – rich and full. Thoroughly enchanting”.
94 – Excellent. Stu Robinson The Vinsomniac, Jan 2012.
