      • Rioja and Tempranillo. A classic Spanish region and a classic Spanish grape making for a decidedly classic combination. Of course such a combo comes at a price, no? You expect to pay more for such history, surely? Not in this instance you don't, for this Calo presents with much of the swagger of more expensive Rioja but at a much more accessible price (and with slightly more approachable, softer edges). Lovely rich and mouthfilling Spanish red with plenty of heart.

      • Rioja Alavesa, in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains, is the finest sub-region of Rioja. A patchwork of small vineyards are planted in very poor, sandy soils on the lower slopes. The very low yields, along with the cooler night temperatures, creates wines with intensity matched by elegance and defined structures.

The nose is expressive and fruit-driven with ripe berry aromas, exotic spice and darker briary notes. The palate is fresh and spicy with seductive red berry and varietal cherry cola flavours wrapped in fine tannins before a long and bright finish. This wine will be best drinking from March 2015 and over the next few years.

      • Campbell Mattinson (2009 Vintage) says:

It sees both French and American oak but its dry, savoury, nutty heart shines through. What a delicious drink. The lack of heat through the finish allows the flavour to flow out easily through the finish. Earth and iodine and nuts. It has an easy-going savouriness. Here’s a statement for you: it’s food-style wine that you actually want to drink a lot of (rather than just think you should).

        The Wine Front, Feb 2011

        Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says:

And the Spanish hits just keep on rolling! How do they do it?! 30 yo vines high in Rioja Alavesa, new American and French oak; my goodness, what wonders can be had under $20! Elegant, subtle, food-friendly, layered withred cherries, cherry kernel, vanilla, textural tannins and lovely sour acidity.

        Wine Taste, April 2011

        Regan Drew (2009 Vintage) says:

This is full of dark blueberries, smokey meats, varnished/rubbed new leather. A medium bodied, carefully oaked thing, there's bitter herbs, olives, licorice/cola and some lovely fruits all bounded up tight for the moment with youthful acidity & good tannins....There's some serious metrosexuality about this wine. Definitely a bloke, but had some good styling.
